Books for children with hearing impairment or deafness

Since years, APD has developed several books and manuals to support children and adults with disability and support their caregivers. These are some of the books for children with hearing impairment and deafness. These books can be ordered from APD.

Publications from APD to improve the academic level of Children with Hearing Impairment/Deafness:

1. Nanna Beshe-1 (ನನ್ನ ಭಾಷೆ-೧)

Nanna Beshe-1 was developed for hearing-impaired children to improve their vocabulary. This book has coloured glossy papers with attractive pictures, mapping of a word and sign.

The book helps children learn Indian sign language (ISL) with the help of teachers initially and then independent practice. It builds their confidence in communication.

2. Nanna Beshe-2 (ನನ್ನ ಭಾಷೆ-೨)

Nanna Beshe-2 was developed for hearing-impaired children to learn action words, reading and writing. It has pictorial learning material. It is also a guide for teachers and parents to teach sign language meaningfully.  

3. Nanna Beshe-3 (ನನ್ನ ಭಾಷೆ-೩)

Nanna Beshe-3 was developed for hearing-impaired children to learn the Kannada language through sign language. This book contains grammar and composition. After completion of this book, children will able to read and write Kannada fluently.

This is an activity-oriented book; giving children more opportunity to learn by different language activities.                           

4. Maguvina bhashe kalikeyalli poshkarapathra (Parents Handbook) (ಮಗುವಿನ ಭಾಷಾ ಕಲಿಕೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಪೋಷಕರ ಪಾತ್ರ)

This parent’s handbook is a guide for parents of deaf children. It is very useful for parents to understand their children’s condition, limitation and strength. It also provides an overall understanding of the knowledge and intervention for a deaf child. It explains the importance of hearing aids, communication skills, language learning for the children and guidance on who can give home level support to improve their academics.

5. Indian Sign Language - Alphabets Handbook (ಭಾರತೀಯ ಸಂಜ್ಞೆಭಾಷೆಯಲ್ಲಿ  ಕನ್ನಡ-ಅಂಗ್ಲ ವರ್ಣಮಾಲೆಗಳು)

This book teaches basic sign language beginning with the alphabet in Kannada language. It also teaches English alphabets, numbers, Kannada kagunita and using the Kannada fingers spellings. It helps the children understand the basic language.   

6. Vak mattu Shrvana doshavulla makkala samanya sikshanada kai pide (Teachers Handbook) (ವಾಕ್ ಮತ್ತು ಶ್ರವಣದೋಷವುಳ್ಳ ಮಕ್ಕಳ ಸಮನ್ವಯ ಶಿಕ್ಷಣ)

This handbook is specially designed for teachers to understand deafness, the process of rehabilitation, hearing aids and their maintenance, language building among deaf children, classroom adaption, communication role of peers to support deaf children in the classroom.
