Case Study 1

Deaf Child Worldwide is working with The Association of People with Disability on a regular basis to improve its services for children and people who are hearing impaired. Their association gears APD’s existing programmes and projects in efficient training and mainstream of hearing impaired people.

Areas of engagement include the following:

  • Working with hearing impaired children from the integrated primary school managed by APD
  • Organizing training programmes for developing communication skills with their children.
  • Organizing informal vacation camps that bond hearing impaired children with their close ones.
  • Organizing training programmes for the staff and individual care.
  • training workshops covering life skills, the rights of deaf people and advocacy 
  • training workshops on health and family life issues
  • training for staff in career counselling for young deaf people.
 

Deaf Child also is supporting in the strengthening APD’s interventions in rural areas through the following:

  • Training in language and communication development for Community Based Rehabilitation workers
  • Regular home visits to support family and child’s language development and communication skills
  • Training for pre-school and Anganwadi teachers who will include deaf children in their classes
  • Awareness raising activities amongst mainstream teachers on the inclusion of deaf children
  • Parent training workshops on developing communication skills

Case Study 2

CRY (Child Relief and You) provides financial support to the Association for People with Disability in rural programmes and also strengthens its network to address issues related to disability at different levels including improving functional mobility to sensitization on rights. It works in and around 150 villages in Srinivaspura and Chintamani Taluk, Kolar District, Karnataka. It works primarily with people with locomotor disability. In brief, the association of CRY and APD serves to achieve common goals to improve the lives and livelihoods of people with disability, particularly in the rural areas. Areas of work include;

  • Promotion of equal rights and opportunities for people with disability.
  • Training family and community groups to effectively manage the care and rehabilitation of people with disability.
  • Providing APD’s rural programmes with administrative support in the management of funds, project planning, organizational development, advocacy campaigns, developing and strengthening alliances and networks, and in the development of advocacy materials.
