The nationwide Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) is the flagship programme of Government of India instituted ‘for the achievement of Universalization of Elementary Education’.

A major focus area for SSA is ensuring that ‘every child with special needs, irrespective of the kind, category and degree of disability’ is provided meaningful and quality education. This is done by organizing extensive training programmes to strengthen the academic infrastructure at cluster, block and district level. It also aims at inclusion of children with disabilities in mainstream schools and Home Based Education (HBE).

APD has been acknowledged as a capacity building resource institution by SSA. The expertise of APD and reach of SSA synergize to organize regular training programmes to achieve common goals.

These programmes gear teachers from primary and upper primary schools and volunteers of HBE to create an enabling environment in the classroom for children with disabilities. Children find enjoyment in coming to school and while their parents are assured that learning conditions will make their children capable citizens in future.

Till date, APD has conducted several training programmes for SSA and HBE staff, creating space for children with disabilities in Government Schools in rural and urban areas.
