Resource Support to organizations (RSO)

APD recognizes that the size and complexity, not to mention the urgency, of the challenge of rehabilitating millions of people with disabilities spread across the country, is too large for any one organization.

The more effective approach would be to empower individuals, institutions, DPOs and NGOs in rural and urban communities and enable them to render the required services.

APD is addressing this need for knowledge and capacity proliferation through a multipronged RSO programme that focuses on:

  • Building formal partnerships with selected organizations
  • Executing mutually beneficial strategies against predefined objectives
  • Equipping partner organizations through need-based training, disability orientation and internal management support and
  • Providing financial assistance to enable disability work

RSO’s mission “to support organizations and individuals to enhance reach, improve quality of services and promote sectoral growth”translates into actionable programmes across Early Intervention, Education, Livelihood, Advocacy, Therapy and Mobility programmes.

APD believes that the RSO approach represents the way forward to rapidly extend reach and touch many more lives. Capabilities of partner organizations are reinforced over a five year period through formulation of CBR processes, improving administrative and service effectiveness and strengthening touch points with authorities and support systems. During this time, their processes, services and operations mature and they become ready to sustain disability work in their communities independently.

APD has been able to reach over 2100 persons with disabilities through partner organizations, under RSO initiatives.

Making a Difference in Mulbagal

Service Agency for Rural Women and Children (SARWC)

was a small NGO serving 71 people with Mental Retardation in Mulbagal, Kolar District.

SARWC’s mission to offer appropriate education and training programmes  for persons with MR and to protect their basic human rights resonated with APD and a partnership was struck between the two organizations in November 2008.

In the last two years, APD has helped SARWC re-align its training efforts into structured pre-vocational and vocational programmes. APD’s Pre Vocational courses introduced concepts of behaviour modification, communication, time management and colour identification. Vocational training courses in the production of organic manure, garland making etc were launched.

APD has been providing both financial and technical support through project planning, training SARWC staff and enhancing internal operations by improving documentation, administration, finance and resource mobilization processes.

These efforts to share knowledge and best practices in the field of disability have led to more than a threefold increase in the number of beneficiaries. Over 250 persons with MR are now benefitting from this partnership!
